New Faroese Textbook [10 Jan 2016|06:40am]

ringlat

Hey, dunno if anyone on this comm is still alive but I've just begun writing a textbook that teaches Faroese, with mentions of stuff in relation to Icelandic, Swedish and English where appropriate. I should finish it relatively soon.

It's intended for people who haven't ever learnt a Germanic language before (besides having English as a mother tongue) and those who are learning Icelandic should get a lot of use out of it too since the grammar's almost exactly the same.

Research help [31 Oct 2008|11:54pm]

lula_neith
I'm writing a story. Part of it is set in the Faroe Islands. How would one travel from Torshavn to Sandoy? And once on Sandoy, how would one get to the tiny village of Dalur? I'm assuming ferry from south of Torshavn, but what city/town would the ferry leave from? Would there be a bus down to Dalur once landing in Skopun? I have googled maps, but am just trying to get a clearer picture of what the travel would be like from those here who may actually have been there or live on the Faroe Islands. Thank you in advance for your help!

Enekk lyrics [06 May 2008|11:27pm]

Hey all. I'm wondering, if anyone listens to Enekk, would you mind writing down the lyrics to "Maður Stoð Við Stovuvegg" from their album Fýra nætur fyri jól? I'm not looking for a translation. Just the lyrics. I can't seem to find them anywhere!

Quality of flight between Reykjavik and the Faroes [05 Sep 2007|10:26pm]

iluq
I've heard that the flight between Reykjavik and the Faroe Islands is rough. Is this true? What about in November?

Just curious because I really want to visit but am prone to flight anxiety even on the smoothest flights; however, if I were prepared I'm sure I could handle it.

June on the Faroe islands [08 May 2007|06:06pm]

I'm going to the Faroe islands in June, on the Nordkurs to learn about - well - many things Faroese, language, literature, culture...

Now, I don't know that much about what to see and what not to miss and other cool, strange and interesting things to do. I'll probably have a couple of days to travel around if I feel like it, so at this point I'm just asking for you to tell me everything, anything! about the Faroe islands.

Hello everybody. My name is Mitjan, I'm journalist from Moscow, Russia. I'm going to visit Faroes during the last decade of March.

So, if some people from Faroes want to have a cup of coffee with me in Torshavn or other town, please comment :) I may bring souvenirs from Russia :)

If anyone has some other advice etc, it would also be great.

Planning a holiday [18 Feb 2007|09:35am]

ivythewanderer
Hello,
I've recently joined this community, mostly because I'm right about planning a trip to the Faroe islands and would therefore love to get some infos from people who have already been there and/or locals. (Actually, getting in touch with some locals would be very interesting, if anyone here fancies to add me! ;o) ).

So, I'm most likely going to travel to the Faroe islands for two weeks in August and I believe that's going to give me enough time to visit all the islands, even having to rely on public transportation. I have already done quite some research, got brochures etc...so I do have some ideas about what to do and see while there...But I'd really love to hear from other travellers who were there before: what are some things that you think I should not miss? And locals: any useful informations you'd like to share with me?

(As a reference, I'm very familiar with all Scandinavian countries, having lived in Sweden, and  do speak those languages so I am hoping to be able to at elast read & understand a little of far oeriska...)

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hello all Faroe fans, I'm a Finnish girl who desperately needs some up-to-date information about the Faroe Islands. I've read about the law agaisnt corporal punishment of children. Anything about the F.I's role in international events, organisations, what's up inside the country. anything. I trieed to read the newspaper, but the language isn't close enough to Swedish for me to understand. Please!!! Thanks a million for your help.

Hello! I just wonder, are there any textbooks of Faroese available on the Net? I mean, except Lockwood's grammar and Jeffrei Henriksen's "Kursus i Færøsk"? Amazon's silent on that question, as far as I know.

Thanks in advance! :)

I'm reading a Faroese book in hopes of understanding the language. Well, it's sort of helping, but some passages I can't make out because there's a keyword I don't understand. So, I'd be really grateful if you could tell me what the words in italics mean (and the entire italic sentence).

Eg havi verið úti og løpið skalv vid Mortani og teinum. Tad var sostuttligt .

Eg havi ikki fyrr hugsað um, at hann er so vakur og prúður .

Tað var so skýmligt inni, at hini ikki varnaðust nakað.

Is Onnu an inflection of Anna? So that Omma Onnu really just means Anne's grandmother.

Thanks.

A cool Folk/Jazz song from Enekk. When I was starting to learn Faroese, I noticed how different the pronunciation was compared to Old Norse, or Icelandic. Have a listen.

Help needed! [10 Jan 2006|12:01am]

Does anybody happen to know the name of the dome shaped observatory way on top of one of the main roads that stretches across the Streymoy island (mains island with Torshavn on it)?
It looks quite eerie but you can't really see it (mainly above cloud) unless you climb to the top of the "small" road that leads you right up to it.
It seems that my google search abilities have abandonned me completely...

I would be very grateful for any help or advice you could give me concerning finding this place's name and exact location (as in what should I call the place it is built on) :)
Thank you!

and a little picture of it, just in case....Collapse )

I am so excited to find a Faroe Islands community! You could say I am obsessed with all things Faroese. I am half Faroese myself. Live in Colorado, USA, but would give nearly anything ('cept the hubby) to live there for a while. My last trip was last year in the summer. Oooooh I miss it.

By the way, this page is completely unviewable in Firefox and is glitchy on IE. Can you change the hover highlight from that stripey thing? I can't tell what I am clicking on. There are lots of images and stuff that when I hover over it jumps around. Please try to fix these things so the community page is easier to view/use. Thx.

I would like to be able to understand Faroese, but I was wondering if it will be very hard for me to accomplish this. First of all, my native language is Norwegian and I have a pretty good understanding of both Swedish and Danish. Furthermore, my father is Faroese, but he has never taught me and I have never been to the Faroe Islands.

Am I right in thinking it probably wouldn't extremely hard learning? Especially if I ask my father to start speaking it to me?
